2023 Anthology reading recap

“This can be the beginning of something big for future generations” José G. (parent of COMPAS anthology author)

The COMPAS Anthology Reading took place at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023. This special event highlighted profound and inspiring young poets who were selected to be included in the 44th edition of the COMPAS anthology, “a fire, a river, a window,” which was edited by COMPAS Teaching Artist May Lee-Yang.

As the start of the event approached, youth and adults flowed into the Minnesota History Center. Attendees were warmly greeted by COMPAS team members as they signed in, browsed the beautifully-designed anthology, posed for photos, and entered the MN History Center’s 3M theatre.

There was an outpouring of support for the young authors (ages 5-18) and their innovative poems and creative stories. Topics ranging from friendship, leadership, dreaming big, self-esteem, the need to feel safe, race, bullying, mental health, body image, and much more.

While students, families and community members filled the venue, COMPAS conducted on-site interviews with the brilliant young authors. COMPAS content creator, Ashley Lauren, asked youth and parents a series of questions about their work and the value of COMPAS programming.

During an interview, Lana D. (Grade 5, Bailey Elementary) shared how she wrote a creative story titled, “Fake Friends and More,” while in the 4th grade. Her teaching artist at the time was Stephen Peters, who “had really high expectations, but was still a great teacher,” she said.

Performing in front of an audience isn’t always easy, but all of the youth exuded bravery as they spoke their truth upon the stage. When Lana D. was asked about how she felt sharing her work, she said, “A little nervous, but excited.”

The young authors were also asked to share advice for other children and teens who want to do creative things like write poetry, but may be afraid they can't do it well. “Try and go for it and try your best, and don’t care what other people think,” advised Lana D.

Lana D.’s mother, Tara, shared, “I feel incredibly proud of the work she is doing, she puts her heart and soul into everything that she does.” COMPAS is dedicated to supporting the youth in their creative endeavors. Our core mission is to deliver creative experiences that unleash the potential within all of us.

When asked about the value of COMPAS programming, Tara explained: “I think creative writing is incredibly important, and sometimes if it’s not introduced at a young age, I don’t think that students or children even know they have the capability.”

During the event, multiple parents commented on the importance of supporting arts education programs like those offered by COMPAS. Maria G. said, “It gives kids the opportunity to express themselves and grow.” “This can be the beginning of something big for future generations,” José G commented.

This event was made more successful due to the collective participation of young poets, supportive adults, family members, teaching artists, and youth who wanted to see the performances. Everyone came together to honor the work of young authors and pay homage to COMPAS teaching artists who had a positive impact on the youth. Teaching Artists truly equip youth with the necessary tools and skills to be successful.

During the COMPAS Anthology reading, the audience witnessed the most profound stories and poetic masterpieces, so eloquently spoken by young authors. All who were in attendance were introduced to an optimal level of creativity, heartfelt messages, and unforgettable testimonies. Their awesome literary work and performances truly captivated the audience.

The exceptional and thought provoking performances provided participants and attendees with invaluable insight about what youth experience today. For example, concerns about technology, challenges of social media and not feeling accepted, but also the power of creativity, resiliency and surpassing the odds.

For 50 years, COMPAS has supported and promoted creativity amongst all youth and adults. Thanks to our generous donors and dedicated teaching artists, we’re able to make a positive difference in the lives of youth and adults across Minnesota.
