Acclaimed flutist and composer Zhang Ying and storyteller Rhonda Lund bring China’s ancient musical and storytelling traditions into vivid new light. Zhang Ying began his professional musical career at age 16, playing the Chinese bamboo flute in a traditional orchestra. Now he plays and composes on eleven different woodwind instruments from across China. Rhonda Lund is an experienced storyteller, actor and director. Specializing in folktales and masks, she has researched source material on multiple trips to China and India, and also Borneo, Singapore, Mexico, Spain, Morocco and the Czech Republic.

Dragons, Flutes & Monkeys

Take a tour of ancient Chinese culture with traditional instruments and folklore. Rhonda brings the dramatic characters to life through storytelling, while Zhang Ying adds musical accompaniment with bamboo, clay, and bone flutes. Listen to the unique sounds of the di bamboo flute and the xun, a clay egg-shaped flute first played 6,000 years ago. Be entertained by stories of a boy who meets a friendly dragon, and the Monkey King, a magical super hero from the Ming Dynasty.
