Teaching Artist Statement
This is not a small voice
you hear this is a large
voice coming out . . .
—Sonia Sanchez, “This Is Not a Small Voice”
My goal as a teaching artist is to foster creativity and language play, creating an environment that welcomes all students to express themselves. I believe that creative writing belongs in our daily lives—that it helps us communicate and understand our emotions and motivations, that it helps us focus on precious small moments in a world that can get overwhelming.
I teach the students to experiment, to take leaps of imagination, and to embrace happy language accidents as the place where art can be found. I teach techniques of rhythm, repetition, and other points of craft while at the same time encouraging flexibility and creativity by concentrating on the process rather than the final product. There is no right or perfect poem. There are instead steps on the journey of self-expression.
