Grantseekers

An important part of our mission is to engage communities in providing support to arts activities that work at the grassroots level. We do that each year through the United Arts Fund, Minnesota's only workplace giving fund for the arts.

COMPAS has a 57-year history of raising grant support from individuals in a variety of public and private sector institutions and companies. This year we awarded 50 grants totaling $206,583 to 42 arts organizations across the state, made possible by the gifts of more than 2,000 United Arts Fund donors. These projects run the gamut from theatre performances in homeless shelters, to arts education activities in schools devastated by budget cuts, to helping emotionally disturbed youth find their voice through the medium of jazz.

Grant Programs

Grant funding decisions are made through a competitive panel process. These panels include a variety of artists, educators, and community members who determine which proposals best meet the vision and published review criteria of each grant program , and reflect the COMPAS mission. The Fund offers four different grant support programs:

  • General Fund (General Operations Support)
  • General Fund (Programs & Projects Support)
  • Greater Minnesota School Arts Fund (outside the TC metro area)
  • School Arts Fund (12-county Twin Cities metro area)

We also accomplish our mission by working collaboratively with other funders to help manage their grantmaking activities. The Travelers’ Arts & Diversity Grants Committee — through COMPAS — grants funding twice a year to organizations that use the arts as a communication tool to broaden and deepen learning opportunities of middle and high school-aged students in Saint Paul Public Schools, and extends participation opportunities deep into the community. Preference is given to organizations that benefit financially disadvantaged youth in the East Metro area.
