Cyril Paul

I grew up listening to Calypso music. When I was in Standard Four, I sang a duet with my schoolmate. We were called upon on many occasions to perform.  Mardi Gras, or Carnival, is when Trinidad and Tobago islanders engage themselves with great preparation to celebrate these two holidays. People wear colorful costumes and parade the streets in large bands of people, dancing (shuffle) along to the rhythm of Soca music. Historically, Carnival is the celebration of the freedom from slavery and independence from the British Empire.  But the history of carnival as the central focal point of carnival becomes sublimated. That’s the story I bring to my programs: the enthusiasm of the carnivalians, the excitement of the story being refreshed and renewed and demonstrated on the streets of Port of Spain.

Cyril has developed a fantastic relationship with each of the students. He is very positive and that was easily picked up by the students. He taught us so much. Not just songs and movement, but a culture. We will not forget our experience.
